Isabelle has a gift: when she paints individuals, she has the ability to bring spirits across to live in her world. However, a tragedy has prevented her from painting these individuals ever since her college days. However, a letter from Kathy, a dear friend long dead, and the arrival of another old friend makes Isabelle pick up her brush again and face the demons she has hidden from for so long.
I loved this book! Charles de Lint is a compelling writer; one of the strongest parts of his writing is that he creates this world that is a perfect blend of the everyday and the extraordinary. I absolutely loved the setting. The story is written in such a way that you have to keep guessing and trying to figure out what’s going on. I also found the characters very relatable; I liked that no one was exactly perfect, and I thought de Lint took the reader through Isabelle and the others’ challenges very well. Overall, I found the book touching and fascinating, and I definitely recommend it.
