Before I go any further, I should perhaps mention that I sort of tend to watch whatever I feel like. Therefore, most of the anime I watch is not necessairly brand new. This write-up may get broken into more than one entry, so that everyone–including myself–doesn’t suffer from overload. I hope you enjoy!
Since I’m one of those people in loan deferrement school (a.k.a graduate school), I’m going to just review the animes that I watched over this past semeseter. Up first is Samurai 7!
I like to describe Samurai 7 as an instance where the directors took history and mecha, threw it into a blender, and hit the buttom. The result was this series. In a world where samurai walk and technology has resulted in these giant-machine men, a rice village is terrorized by machine-men bandits. The village elder decides to rebel, and sends the village’s water priestess and two companions to the city to find samurai to protect the village. They succeed in finding seven samurai, and they head back to fight against their tormentors.
It took awhile for me to get into this series. The characters are fairly basic, and, while I certainly liked some of them, I wasn’t sure I was totally sold on the series. About halfway through though, I really began to get into the plot and the characters. I think it was because the relationships had finally been well-established, and, at that point, the stakes in the series were extremely high. It took awhile for it to grow on me, but, in the end, I thought it was worth watching. I’m not sure I’d go around recommending it to everyone, but I liked it well enough that I would not try to dissuade anyone from watching it, as it is a fun series and does get quite good.
Up next is Samurai Champloo!
